Capturing a Practice Session

The practice tab is where you'll capture your practice sessions. You don't need to look at it during practice; once you've verified that your devices are connected and that notes are being captured, you can practice as you always have, and review that practice later.

There are a few features and things to be aware of regarding practice:

  • A session is intended to capture your entire practice, not just one drill or piece. Better Piano Practice will automatically detect "segments" within your practice session. There is no need to start and stop a session between pieces.
  • Take breaks! Any pauses of 4 seconds or longer are removed from the recording automatically. Sessions automatically end after 10 minutes of inactivity.
  • The "Auto-start" toggle allows session to begin automatically when the system is idle, and a note is detected on your selected MIDI device. This allows you to leave BPP running in the background and to practice as normal. Since browser may have their own policies regarding background and idle tabs, you'll probably want to ensure this works in your setup before depending on it to capture your next concerto.
  • When a session is active, the Notation toggle can be used to hide or show the musical notation for the piece you are currently playing once BPP is able to detect it, with the current measure highlighted. However, BPP isn't optimized as a play-along style app, and it may make tracking errors (e.g. if you play a wrong note and/or there are identical passages in different parts of the piece). Improving this is a goal, so your feedback on this would be welcome.
  • If you use a webcam for fingering detection, you may choose whether or not to monitor the video feed during a session. This is mostly to ensure that the entire keyboard is in the frame, and correctly identified. If your setup is stable, you may wish to turn this off if you find it distracting.
